Reflection 1: Week 1
Over the last week, I have learned much about golf, the course, and maintenance. In the previous week, I have learned from the best; Derrick has helped us a lot. Also, the maintenance crew has helped us out by teaching us how to do tasks like washing carts, replacing divots, washing balls, and even driving the machine that picks up balls in the driving range. In learning these tasks, I started to appreciate the work put into a golf course. It is a humbling experience because a golf course can look like a grassy field from a distance, But to others, a golf course is a screenshot of the hard work, dedication, and patience it takes to maintain that image. I enjoy the project I'm working on; I've had a lot of fun and learned so much from the guys who work here. Also, it has been an excellent opportunity for me to get out on the course and get back into the game.
I love golf, and playing this much again reminds me of when I was younger, and my dad, my uncle, and I would go out and play 18 on a Saturday morning. So far, we have had some surprises. The first and most devastating is Quinn's knee situation. This was a shock for everyone because a freak accident resulted in Quinn needing crutches as his injury would take him through a tuff surgery. This has been a challenge during our project because there is a limit on activities that Quinn can partake in, so we have to pick and choose what we do. Overall we have done well at a balance of keeping his knee safe and being on the course doing everything possible. Other than the injury we had, there haven't been any other big surprises that we have dealt with. From this week's activities, we are going to benefit because all of the activities we learned we could use this week to chip away more at our project. I might work at a golf course this summer, and learning all of these skills will be very useful this summer. Another benefit to learning the skills is that I will always be able to use this knowledge. Doing this project will help me achieve my goals because in doing this project, I have learned more about customer service and understanding the customer's needs. Here at the golf course, Derrick constantly identifies what the customer wants and needs. Derrick has identified a target market for people coming to New Hampshire looking to stay over at an "on course motel" Derrick also provides dining services, and their pro shop offers top-notch gear and company merch as I learn what Derrick does to keep his niche market afloat. I will start to understand the foundation of his business plan and why it works so well—inevitably bringing me closer to my goals.
